The Healthy Living Benefit of Regular Physical Activity: Enhancing Postural Awareness and Well-Being Through Reformer Pilates
Abstract
Reformer Pilates is increasingly recognized as a popular mind-body recreational activity that emphasizes core strength, flexibility, and postural awareness. While its general benefits for physical well-being are acknowledged, its specific contribution to enhancing postural health and quality of life in individuals with mild to moderate postural asymmetry remains underexplored. This study evaluated the effects of a 12-week structured Reformer Pilates program on trunk posture, perceived pain, and quality of life. This controlled study involved 30 participants (aged 18–45) assigned to a Reformer Pilates group or a control group. Assessments occurred at baseline, 4 weeks, and 12 weeks. Between-group differences were analyzed using repeated-measures ANOVA and ANCOVA, with baseline values as covariates to control for potential differences. The Reformer Pilates group demonstrated significant improvements across all measures compared to the control group. Key changes included a 23.1% reduction in trunk rotation, 37.1% improvement in postural symmetry, 50% reduction in pain (VAS), 23.2% increase in SF-36 Physical Health Summary, 19.4% in Mental Health Summary, 29.0% in SRS-22 total score, and 42.5% reduction in ODI (all p<0.001). ANCOVA confirmed robust between-group differences at 12 weeks (all p<0.001 after adjustment, partial η²=0.898–0.985), indicating large effect sizes. The control group showed no significant changes. These findings indicate that a 12-week Reformer Pilates program is an effective recreational intervention for improving postural health, function, and well-being in individuals with postural asymmetry. The results support integrating this modality into community-based health and recreation programs to promote musculoskeletal wellness.
